Instructor (part-time)
Location: Kitsilano, North Vancouver, Coquitlam, Burnaby, Aberdeen Square (Richmond), UBC, Victoria
Position Summary:
Instructors at Under the GUI are responsible for teaching students the core concepts of computer programming, and ensuring that they are being challenged during the learning process. They are also responsible for the provision of a fun and engaging environment that fosters creativity and critical thinking skills. Curriculum and training will be provided to instructors.
Classes take place on Saturday/Sunday during the day. Instructors should be available for at least one semester (=5 months) to teach one (or both) of these days.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Teaches students in learning the fundamentals of computer programming
- Manages classrooms of up to 6 students and ensures fairness and equal opportunities of all students
- Supports, encourages, and inspires students to further their creativity and critical thinking skills
- Follows and enhances the existing curriculum at Under the GUI
- Prepares progress reports of the students for parents to assess twice per semester
- Provides and ensures a fun, interactive, and engaging environment for students to thrive in during the learning process
Qualifications:
- Previous experience with Unity, PixelPAD.io, Game Maker and/or other game development kits
- Intermediate to advanced knowledge of computer programming and related concepts
- Ability to convey complicated code in a simple manner for children to understand
- Previous teaching/tutoring experience is preferred
- Holder of, or working towards, a bachelor’s degree in computer programming, computer science, computer engineering or technology related field is preferred
- Sector Vulnerability Check required under your municipality

Summer Camp Instructor (July – August)
Location: Kitsilano, North Vancouver, Coquitlam, Aberdeen Square (Richmond), UBC, Victoria
Position Summary:
Summer Camp Instructors at Under the GUI are responsible for teaching students the core concepts of computer programming, robotics, and/or engineering. They are also responsible for the provision of a fun and engaging environment that fosters creativity and critical thinking skills. Curriculum and training will be provided to instructors.
Job Type: Summer Full-Time. This includes the months of July and part of August (with a possibility of additional part-time weekend work in the winter and spring terms)
Salary: $18.00 – $23.00/hour
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Teaches students the fundamentals of computer programming, engineering and/or robotics by following the course material and creating simple devices, games or applications (apps).
- Effectively manages a class of up to 6 students with varying levels of technical knowledge and provides equal learning opportunities for all participating kids.
- Encourages and inspires students to further their creativity and critical thinking skills.
- Provides a fun, interactive, and engaging environment for students to thrive in during the summer camp.
Qualifications:
- You enjoy working with kids!
- You are patient, responsible, cheerful, and you smile a lot : )
- You are comfortable managing a classroom of energetic, young students.
- You have some experience working with Unity, PixelPAD.io, Game Maker, C#, Python, HTML, Java or a similar programming language.
- You have intermediate to advanced knowledge of computer programming and related concepts.
- Completion, or near completion, of a bachelor’s degree / diploma in video game development, computer science, engineering or technology related field.
- You have an ability to communicate complicated concepts in a way children can easily understand.
- If you have some previous teaching or tutoring experience, that’s a huge plus!
- Vulnerable Sector Check required under your municipality (we will cover this cost for you).
